Value and Benefit – Authentic Reflexology

Considering an investment in your holistic health? Wondering what budget you can justify spending on natural therapy? Should you prioritise health before beauty or vacation? What is a reasonable price to pay?

As a therapist specialising in Reflexology I can help to answer these questions. My own investment in my holistic health is on-going as I continue to practice self-healing and continuously develop my healing knowledge and skills.

When I started out first, I sought therapy to support myself through challenging times, whilst making important transitions to improve my well-being. Reflexology offers a variety of benefits depending on the needs of the individual.

For myself, I could feel the benefits which included alleviating IBS, improved sleep, reduced anxiety, clearer thinking, more positive attitude and zest for life. I knew that reflexology was a very worth-while investment for my future.
At that time I worked in full-time employment and eventually moved to part-time employment so I learned to budget for all of the essential living expenses including holistic therapy.

Not everyone who engages with holistic treatments, are heading in the direction of being a therapist themselves but the people who gain the most are definitely the ones who are interested in improving some aspect of their well-being not just for today but for the rest of their life-time.

Giving our minds and bodies regular, positive messages that are absorbed through the deep relaxation and releasing of tension that occurs during reflexology treatment, is like a training ground for life.

The benefits are not just to the person themselves they can have a much wider impact in our world.

Your improved well-being has the capacity to positively affect the well-being of those in your circle of family, friends, co-workers and also in the wider community.

The more ease we create for ourselves the more positive effect we can have on others with whom we interact.

So your decision to invest in your well-being has value not just for yourself.

Clients ask how many treatments they should continuosly have?

From personal experience both as therapist and a client I have seen more sustained results from a course of four to six weekly treatments. It really depends on the expectation of the client and how well they respond to the initial treatment.

For additional benefit I offer to teach my clients how to use reflexology for their own continuous self-treatment. This is optional but I highly recommend it. I also provide self-treatment workshops to small groups of six to ten people.

Today could be the best day for you to make this investment in your holistic health. The first step is to make a booking by visiting the contact page.

Learning to care for your child with reflexology

Reflexology is a very adaptable and beneficial therapy and easy to apply once you learn some basic techniques!

The good news is that is relatively easy for many of us to learn these new techniques and not only use them for ourselves but also use them for our children and loved ones.

Sure, reflexology therapists have to undergo extensive training to learn the specifics of how to treat others professionally and in a mindful way. Mainly, this is to ensure that all therapists adhere to (and are held accountable to) the highest standards in their profession. The fact is, you can use the information in a non-professional capacity for yourself and your partner or children.

I started out treating my little nephews as babies and they responded brilliantly to short sessions of reflexology on their feet. It is very soothing, encouraging good digestion, better sleep patterns and the therapeutic touch has a calming effect on the nervous system.

These were exactly the results experienced by a recent client who brought her two very young children for a treatment. During the session, Mum also learned a few basic techniques which she continued to apply at home. I am delighted with the report she gave after one week, letting me know that all previous issues with sleep and digestion had cleared for her babies. This is a fantastic result!

Discover Your Magic Touch – Authentic Reflexology

‘Discover Your Magic Touch’ my follow up workshop to ‘The Power In Your Hands’ delivered at the Mind Body Spirit festival October 2015 sent a group of participants, including myself, back into a crowded venue floating on a fluffy cloud.

The purpose of this workshop which provides self-treatment well-being tips through hand reflexology is to explore the nature of touch in healing. There is much more to be noticed, sensed and experienced when it comes to healing touch. Bringing our minds into the present moment is so essential to being authentic and open to healing.

The purpose of healing is to bring ourselves into an optimum state of being so as to allow us to achieve/be all that is within our power and capability. It takes a constant practice to keep stress at bay and to deal with the pressures and challenges we are likely to encounter in life. This practice stands to us. That is why I always encourage my reflexology clients to use the self-treatment tips of hand reflexology between treatments.

‘Bringing our minds into the present moment is so essential

to being authentic and open to healing.’

The workshops provide for a deeper practice of this self treatment. This particular workshop had a meditative feel to it from start to finish. I have found it is best to go with the flow of the group of individuals who present for this learning experience, just as it is important to tailor every reflexology treatment to the individual needs of clients.

The three day event of Mind Body Spirit & Yoga festival was once again a great success. There was opportunity for interesting discussions on healing with fellow therapists and also with regards to the future direction of reflexology in Ireland. I had the opportunity to provide treatment to wonderful individuals and some allowed me to learn from their knowledge too as I had some reflexology therapists in their midst.

‘It is important to tailor every reflexology treatment

to the individual needs of clients.’

I heard sounds of South America’s wooden flute, the roar of the Chinese dragon and resounding of great symbols and drums. I always enjoy walking Tony Christies Labyrinth. My house is filling up fast with the stunning crystals from Stone Age.

Reflexology Workshop - Authentic Reflexology

Reflexology Workshop – Authentic Reflexology

If you are interested in learning more about reflexology and to experience its benefits I will be there to talk with you about this. I will also be providing 30 minute therapy sessions. It is possible to create a little sanctuary amidst the crowds, reflexology so so beneficial many people just completely switch off.

The highlight for me last year was in helping to relieve chronic pain which one client had in her leg. She had not admitted her pain to me prior to the treatment even though we had gone through the standard consultation.

As the treatment proceeded however, it became apparent that she was uncomfortable. I consulted with my client once again and agreed to use visualisation and specific working of the leg, hip and knee reflexes on her foot. My client was amazed and ecstatic to find her pain had completely stopped after less than 10 minutes treatment.

This year I will provide my workshop entitled ‘Discover Your Magic Touch’. In this workshop I will be demonstrating the use of reflexology in self treatment and focusing on the nature of touch and mental awareness in relieving tension and finding a place of calm.

I am looking forward to the event and always enjoy the atmosphere and being amongst fellow therapists.

Authentic On TV – Authentic Reflexology

Being passionate about what you do in life certainly opens doors and leads you to unexpected places. As I commenced my training for reflexology and holistic studies I never dreamed I would be shooting a TV feature with film crew from Irish TV putting reflexology centre stage as a highly beneficial therapy growing in popularity, especially in the last thirty years in Ireland.

I say yes to opportunity and if you’ve been following my early posts you may notice that taking action and building confidence are things I have had to develop within myself. You can only truly help others when you have first learned for yourself. And I am seriously keen to encourage others on their quest to put their self-healing to the fore and create more fulfilling lives for themselves.

So without further ado, I would like to thank once again the crew and all at Irish TV for inviting me to take part in this feature of Carlow County Matters in order to share the benefits of Reflexology with the wider world.

The last seven minutes of this episode of Carlow County matters showcases Caroline Cunningham and Authentic Reflexology. Click To View.

Reflexology – An Individual Choice With Many Benefits

Reflexology for restoration and maintenance of balance within the body, this is the standard phrase reflexology therapists are guided to use when advertising this remarkable therapy.

Authentic Reflexology

Authentic Reflexology

As a therapist I’ve had the opportunity to introduce clients to reflexology for the very first time.

‘I’d don’t understand how a treatment to the feet can cause me to feel as if I had a deep all over body massage! one recent client exclaimed at the end of her first ever reflexology treatment.

After a second follow-up treatment she remarked, ‘I have tried other therapies, but I have only ever fallen into sleep while having reflexology!

She had come for treatment as she had heard about the growing reputation of reflexology in fertility optimisation. Busy, demanding lifestyles can upset the balance for our hormonal system and while there is a dedication to research within the world of reflexology, clients tend to make their choices based on what they’ve heard from friends and family who have tried the therapy for themselves.

On the subject of fertility, the wonderful news of a pregnant client is such a thrill when it is announced. The relaxation that reflexology has the ability to induce is certainly powerful. Through working the reflex points on the feet (areas corresponding to the systems and organs of the body), tension can be released, even tension we are not aware of, the circulation of blood and lymph improves the nourishment of body tissues and the elimination of toxins, creating optimum conditions for our body and mind to function more smoothly.

Sometimes clients turn to reflexology when medicine has not been able to shed light upon the reason or cure for their ailment. So was the case of a gentleman who had a urinary problem causing him many trips to the bathroom, particularly during the night which caused further problems due to lack of sleep. He had been for scans and there was no diagnosis as to the cause of the problem.

He came for a total of 6 reflexology treatments, four weekly treatments and two fortnightly treatments. He noticed improvements after the first treatment and more rapid improvements after each subsequent treatment. He was pro-active in his healing as he pledged to drink less fluids in the evening, reduce daily caffeine drinks, take more regular exercise, doing some foot exercise with a tennis ball in order to loosen a very stiff ankle and foot. He was a new man within weeks, full of the joys of life and giving me added heath tips and philosophical advice. I was thrilled for his self-healing results through reflexology.

Another client sought reflexology as she had been experiencing very low energy and had stopped her regular jogging routine. When I examined her feet I noticed very large hard lumps on both feet above the heel at the inner and outer sides of the sole (plantar surface). They had been there for years she told me and her doctor had concluded that they were not life threatening. They may not have been relevant to her complaint but I recorded them on my foot charts noting the size of each and carried on with weekly treatments.

She had a very responsible fast paced job and reflexology was her way to completely zone out. She found the treatment highly meditative. Soon she regained her energy and motivation to resume jogging on a daily basis. Every week I checked the lumpy parts of her feet. I was noticing a reduction in their size. After ten weekly treatments two of the lumps were no longer visible and two were considerably reduced in size.

The response to reflexology treatment is individual. Each of us is unique and we deserve to be treated accordingly. As a therapist, I am dedicated to helping to the best of my knowledge and ability through the working of reflexes on hands or feet. Helping a client to relax from the very start of treatment and providing encouragement to take an active part in their own self-healing is are essential in my role as therapist. Creating a sense of being cared for can be the most important element of the treatment particularly if a person’s has been dealing with more traumatic issues such as loss or perhaps dealing with cancer.

If you have not yet discovered reflexology I invite you to give a try and visit my website for further details.

The Power of ‘Touch Communication’ in Reflexology

I have always been fascinated by the evolution of humanity in terms of its ability to communicate. The mobile phone rapidly took the place of the landline and public payphone and the internet is competitor of the television. Arthur C. Clarke envisaged much of this evolution in his fictional novel and film adaptation of ‘2001 A Space Odyssey’, in which a form of ‘Skype’ was portrayed with an audio-visual space link to Earth.

Telephone Box

Telephone Box

For a time it seemed our technological advancements had far surpassed our actual skills in verbal communication. The ability to effectively and appropriately communicate our true feelings has had a tendency to remain heavily guarded and not without good reason. This was very much my own experience in the past as I struggled to understand the impact of the trauma’s and strains I was experiencing back then. I was in the dark as to the words and behaviours required to assert or defend myself appropriately.

Despite this, as a teenager I envisaged a distant future in which telepathy would be an accepted method of communication. There has already been an advancement in this area.

There are other means of communication considered by the more observant of our society. Body language, the degree of sparkle in a person’s eyes, the level of ‘energy’ in their voice and manner of speaking, the way a person walks, all of these are known especially amongst actors and holistic therapists. For some these are skills to learn and for others they are more naturally observed.

Authentic Reflexology

Authentic Reflexology

In holistic therapy all of these communication methods are important factors in determining how best to treat each client’s individual needs.

Reflexology is the application of pressure to specific points on the feet (or hands, ears and face), known as reflexes which correspond to body organs and systems with the aim of relieving tension and restoring balance in body and mind.

In my own practice of reflexology I consider the aspect of ‘touch communication’ to be an extremely powerful element of the treatment. In my training, with a number of very experienced therapists, it was evident that this form of therapeutic communication is not something new, as I learned to adapt treatment for the needs of people who may be dealing with more serious issues such as cancer.

Touch can be soothing to provide comfort, firm to encourage release of tension or extremely gentle conveying empathy with sensitive emotional states or delicate body tissues. Touch can even be hypnotic in cajoling a person into deeper relaxation.

Every touch has a meaning corresponding with the intention behind it. When I receive a massage or reflexology treatment I am informed of the level of awareness of the therapist to my needs. It is always a good idea to check with a client how they are experiencing the nature of touch being applied as telepathy is still in its infancy and also it conveys that your intentions are indeed for their highest good.

Thank you for reading. I am interested to hear own experience of the therapeutic power of touch communication in the comments below.

Hand Reflexology Just As Effective As Foot Reflexology

Reflexology is fast becoming the therapy of choice for people who seek to maintain and achieve well-being while dealing with life’s constant stresses and strains. Results speak for themselves but it helps that there are many reflexology professionals around the globe who are dedicated to researching the benefits of reflexology.

Reflexology is the application of specific types of pressure at points on the feet known as reflexes. These reflexes ‘mirror’ the body organs and systems whereby a ‘map’ of the reflexes reflects a ‘microsystem’ of the entire person.

Hand Reflexology Authentic Reflexology

Hand Reflexology Authentic Reflexology

Reflexology benefits the client by encouraging the release of tension in body parts, increasing blood supply to internal organs and glands, benefits the elimination of toxins and soothes the nervous system. The overall benefit of reflexology is to bring ‘balance’ to body and mind.

While foot reflexology is more widely popular, reflexology of the hands is just as beneficial. The same reflexes can be found (mapped) on the hands and are treated in similar way as on the feet.

Hand reflexology is more versatile in the sense that a person need not take off their shoes or socks and also it is possible to treat the person while they are seated, for example in their home or in a less private situation for example a hospital or care or community centre. A treatment on the hands also has the added emotional benefit of support as there is a more ‘caring’ connection associated with ‘holding hands’.

Always check that your reflexology therapist is trained to the highest professional standards. This can be validated by asking the therapist if they are a member of a professional regulating body such as Irish Reflexologists’ Institute Ltd (I.R.I.L.). The therapist will have a membership number which is also useful if you have health insurance which covers reflexology. The I.R.I.L. also have an on-line register so you may find the therapist who is qualified in your area.

Change Is Possible – 12 Steps to End Conflict and Restore Peace

Change is possible! This I know.
Knowing that change is possible is, what I consider to be, one of the most powerful healing instruments available to humans, along with showing love.

When we feel stuck we are in conflict with a part of ourselves that is afraid to change. Change is possible however and once we let go of fear of what we consider to be ‘unknown’ we open our ‘heart-mind-spirit’ to the endless possibilities for more positive experience.

Storm brewing over an Irish Lake

Storm brewing over an Irish Lake

I am from a land that has experienced as much conflict as any other war torn nation. Our families’ blood lines have been severed and afflicted by starvation and deprivation, our kin rejected, squashed and taunted for not giving up our plot.

In the past, change was slow. Humans traditionally passed on their knowledge of conflict pain from one generation to another unconscious of their detrimental gift.     Conflict equals tension. Tension equals blockage to the flow of positive energy required to function in the most effective way. When you pinch the stem of a plant you will possibly cut off its supply of nutrients and if you increase the force you will eventually damage its parts. This is what humans do to each other during conflict. This is what I unconsciously do to myself when I am not happy about something in my life. Thankfully change is happening around our globe. Conflicts rage for sure and change may seem hopeless to those who are entangled in the direst situations. But change IS taking place and more people are acknowledging that each of us has a part to play in the restoration of peace.

12 Steps to end conflict and restore peace:

• Acknowledge that conflict is damaging to our health and peace of mind (life).

• Seek inspiration from others who have shown that it is possible to CHANGE in order to have a more peaceful way of living. Hold fast to those examples.

• Educating oneself, learning about conflict resolution and mediation skills is a powerful way to deal with conflict and restore peace.

• If your conflict is with another person (or group/country), endeavour to hear their words and needs beyond their expressions of anger (or bombs).

• Acknowledge the needs of others they will trust that you have the heart to work towards a more peaceful solution.

• Learn to communicate your own needs without the force of anger (or bombs).

• See the common ground that exists between each other. We are all human beings…that should be enough.

• Imagine what life would be like for you (or your country) if peace is restored.

• Seek the help of healing therapies to encourage letting go of tension from your body and to encourage healing towards a feeling of well-being (self-care).

• Tune in to the essence of all living and non-living things (rocks, plants, mountains, rivers) our earth and Universe has much more to teach us than we may realise.

• Tune into your own sacred essence. The more we acknowledge our own uniqueness the more love and care we are willing and able to extend to others.

• Never cease to seek inspiration for change towards more positive ways of living.

A few years ago I spent a week in Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation learning ‘Conflict Resolution and Mediation Skills’. It was a powerful learning experience for me in the dynamics of conflict, mediation and examining the powerful changes that have been achieved around the world including my own country. This course was appropriate for dealing with personal conflict too. Each person in the group had their own story and reason for being there. It was money and time well spent. I urge you to never give up on the fact that CHANGE IS POSSIBLE.
