Reflexology Workshop - Authentic Reflexology

Reflexology Workshop – Authentic Reflexology

If you are interested in learning more about reflexology and to experience its benefits I will be there to talk with you about this. I will also be providing 30 minute therapy sessions. It is possible to create a little sanctuary amidst the crowds, reflexology so so beneficial many people just completely switch off.

The highlight for me last year was in helping to relieve chronic pain which one client had in her leg. She had not admitted her pain to me prior to the treatment even though we had gone through the standard consultation.

As the treatment proceeded however, it became apparent that she was uncomfortable. I consulted with my client once again and agreed to use visualisation and specific working of the leg, hip and knee reflexes on her foot. My client was amazed and ecstatic to find her pain had completely stopped after less than 10 minutes treatment.

This year I will provide my workshop entitled ‘Discover Your Magic Touch’. In this workshop I will be demonstrating the use of reflexology in self treatment and focusing on the nature of touch and mental awareness in relieving tension and finding a place of calm.

I am looking forward to the event and always enjoy the atmosphere and being amongst fellow therapists.

If you are interested in hosting a reflexology workshop at your holistic centre / community centre / work place / corporate event , you can make this possible by contacting Caroline Cunningham (Therapist/Owner of Authentic Reflexology) CONTACT

Authentic On TV – Authentic Reflexology

Being passionate about what you do in life certainly opens doors and leads you to unexpected places. As I commenced my training for reflexology and holistic studies I never dreamed I would be shooting a TV feature with film crew from Irish TV putting reflexology centre stage as a highly beneficial therapy growing in popularity, especially in the last thirty years in Ireland.

I say yes to opportunity and if you’ve been following my early posts you may notice that taking action and building confidence are things I have had to develop within myself. You can only truly help others when you have first learned for yourself. And I am seriously keen to encourage others on their quest to put their self-healing to the fore and create more fulfilling lives for themselves.

So without further ado, I would like to thank once again the crew and all at Irish TV for inviting me to take part in this feature of Carlow County Matters in order to share the benefits of Reflexology with the wider world.

The last seven minutes of this episode of Carlow County matters showcases Caroline Cunningham and Authentic Reflexology. Click To View.

The Power of ‘Touch Communication’ in Reflexology

I have always been fascinated by the evolution of humanity in terms of its ability to communicate. The mobile phone rapidly took the place of the landline and public payphone and the internet is competitor of the television. Arthur C. Clarke envisaged much of this evolution in his fictional novel and film adaptation of ‘2001 A Space Odyssey’, in which a form of ‘Skype’ was portrayed with an audio-visual space link to Earth.

For a time it seemed our technological advancements had far surpassed our actual skills in verbal communication. The ability to effectively and appropriately communicate our true feelings has had a tendency to remain heavily guarded and not without good reason. This was very much my own experience in the past as I struggled to understand the impact of the trauma’s and strains I was experiencing back then. I was in the dark as to the words and behaviours required to assert or defend myself appropriately.

Despite this, as a teenager I envisaged a distant future in which telepathy would be an accepted method of communication. There has already been an advancement in this area.

There are other means of communication considered by the more observant of our society. Body language, the degree of sparkle in a person’s eyes, the level of ‘energy’ in their voice and manner of speaking, the way a person walks, all of these are known especially amongst actors and holistic therapists. For some these are skills to learn and for others they are more naturally observed.

Authentic Reflexology

In holistic therapy all of these communication methods are important factors in determining how best to treat each client’s individual needs.

Reflexology is the application of pressure to specific points on the feet (or hands, ears and face), known as reflexes which correspond to body organs and systems with the aim of relieving tension and restoring balance in body and mind.

 ‘TOUCH COMMUNICATION…EXTREMELY POWERFUL’

In my own practice of reflexology I consider the aspect of ‘touch communication’ to be an extremely powerful element of the treatment. In my training, with a number of very experienced therapists, it was evident that this form of therapeutic communication is not something new, as I learned to adapt treatment for the needs of people who may be dealing with more serious issues such as cancer.

Touch can be soothing to provide comfort, firm to encourage release of tension or extremely gentle conveying empathy with sensitive emotional states or delicate body tissues. Touch can even be hypnotic in cajoling a person into deeper relaxation.

Every touch has a meaning corresponding with the intention behind it. When I receive a massage or reflexology treatment I am informed of the level of awareness of the therapist to my needs. It is always a good idea to check with a client how they are experiencing the nature of touch being applied as telepathy is still in its infancy and also it conveys that your intentions are indeed for their highest good.

Thank you for reading. I am interested to hear own experience of the therapeutic power of touch communication in the comments below.

Hand Reflexology Just As Effective As Foot Reflexology

Reflexology is fast becoming the therapy of choice for people who seek to maintain and achieve well-being while dealing with life’s constant stresses and strains. Results speak for themselves but it helps that there are many reflexology professionals around the globe who are dedicated to researching the benefits of reflexology.

Reflexology is the application of specific types of pressure at points on the feet known as reflexes. These reflexes ‘mirror’ the body organs and systems whereby a ‘map’ of the reflexes reflects a ‘microsystem’ of the entire person.

Hand Reflexology Authentic Reflexology

Hand Reflexology Authentic Reflexology

Reflexology benefits the client by encouraging the release of tension in body parts, increasing blood supply to internal organs and glands, benefits the elimination of toxins and soothes the nervous system. The overall benefit of reflexology is to bring ‘balance’ to body and mind.

While foot reflexology is more widely popular, reflexology of the hands is just as beneficial. The same reflexes can be found (mapped) on the hands and are treated in similar way as on the feet.

Hand reflexology is more versatile in the sense that a person need not take off their shoes or socks and also it is possible to treat the person while they are seated, for example in their home or in a less private situation for example a hospital or care or community centre. A treatment on the hands also has the added emotional benefit of support as there is a more ‘caring’ connection associated with ‘holding hands’.

Always check that your reflexology therapist is trained to the highest professional standards. This can be validated by asking the therapist if they are a member of a professional regulating body such as Irish Reflexologists’ Institute Ltd (I.R.I.L.). The therapist will have a membership number which is also useful if you have health insurance which covers reflexology. The I.R.I.L. also have an on-line register so you may find the therapist who is qualified in your area.

5 Steps To Becoming A Robot – Is this happening to you?

Best Blog Article Finalist

Best Blog Article Finalist

Imagine a mechanical society with no thinking or feeling, everyone rushing about on automatic pilot, elbowing out of the way anything that appears on the horizon that doesn’t match in with this preferred mode of existence. Would you be happy with this? Do you think it is already happening on our streets? And what has Reflexology got to do with all of this?

The following questions may help to determine if you are in danger of joining the Robotic Race.

Q1. Is your life running completely on schedule, every minute accounted for, your targets maxed out to the last with someone reminding you that you could achieve a little more if you try harder (that someone could even be you).

Q2. Do you only read articles that start with headings such as ‘5 Steps To This’ and ‘3 Ways To Do That’ because you don’t have time to read real life stories of personal interest which aim to impart wisdom in a more meaningful way?

Q3. Do the important people in your life have the opportunity to connect with the flesh and blood version of your true self? Are you around long enough (and present) for that to happen?

Q4. Does your food taste really good? Does it interest you at all? Can you smell the subtlety of flowers and does colour have any impact on your being? What about birds? Are they just for birds?

Q5. Can you feel your toes? Are you becoming numb to what’s inside and outside of yourself? Do you expect to be repaired like a machine when part of you stops working, without your input or without any change from your current mode of being?

Assuming you are not yet a robot, use your intuition to decide if you are on the edge of robot living.

So how does Reflexology help to keep robot life at bay?

Reflexology reminds us that every part of our body and mind is inter-connected. Our feet are a sensitive part of ourselves. Therapeutic touch and care goes a long way towards ensuring that we remain in touch with our human side. When we show our human side we enrich our own lives and the lives of those with whom we interact. Colour, smell, taste and sounds have so much to offer us in rich experience. Aim to enrich your life. Show your human side. And give reflexology a go if you haven’t tried it already, you deserve to be cared for, you are human.

On behalf of actual robots, I apologize for suggesting that you are not appreciated in our society. The very first robot I ever learned of was HAL (Arthur C. Clarke Novels) and ‘he’ raised a lot of sympathies as ‘he’ paved the way for all robots. But better for us human’s to remember that this is what we are…human!  Have fun (o;

Reflexotherapy with Hanne Marquardt

What is Reflexotherapy of the feet and who is Hanne Marquardt? Thanks to my ITEC studies in the history of Reflexology, I already knew that Hanne Marquardt has played a key role in the development of this wonderful therapy. So I headed to Kilkenny (Ireland) to discover more about this fascinating lady and therapy.

‘I’m going to be eighty soon’, Hanne informed us at the outset of our two day course. Her eyes twinkled perhaps with wonder and curiosity as to what this new age bracket might herald. That curiosity has remained alive and well for Hanne, who as a young nurse and physiotherapist became most interested in the findings outlined by Eunice Ingham in her book ‘Stories The Feet Can Tell’.

Eunice Ingham is attributed with developing the term ‘Reflexology’ and with the mapping of the whole body onto reflex areas of the feet, reflecting a micro-system of the whole person on the feet. Hanne wistfully reflected on the fact that she actually set out to disprove Eunice’s findings on the results of treatment by reflexology. In those early days the claims of reflexology were quite radical. As I attempted to probe Hanne with my own investigative questions I got a glimpse of how brave she must have been to challenge this pioneering woman.  Hanne admitted humble defeat in her efforts and instead developed a growing respect for her teacher and the practice of reflexology. She has earnestly and whole-heartedly, continued its development and practice, fine-tuning the position of reflex areas and treatment techniques according to her own findings and thereby opening the door to her use of the term ‘Reflexotherapy’.

Two days we spent with Hanne, eagerly listening as she imparted much wisdom and knowledge interspersed with humour and anecdotes for living simply and fruitfully. We watched intently as she demonstrated techniques for treating sensitive reflex areas and harmonising holds. We were put through our paces as she challenged us to locate the reflex areas corresponding to scars on the body of the person being treated. We practiced the treatment of such scars and all that she demonstrated to us under her watchful eye.

Thanks to pioneers such as Eunice Ingham and Hanne Marquardt, Reflexology has grown to be a highly respected and recognised therapy. In Germany, however, Hanne has gained even further recognition for her use of Reflexotherapy as she treats ‘patients’ instead of ‘clients’ and for ‘specific illnesses’ rather than ‘generally’. ‘Always remember’ she paused for effect, ‘you are treating a person not a body or just their feet but a whole person.’ In order not to forget this fact Hanne urged us to use the term ‘someone’ as opposed to ‘somebody’.

Studying with Hanne as our tutor was a pleasurable, productive and valuable learning experience. She clearly enjoyed the weekend also and is keen to return to Ireland soon to refresh our memories and provide opportunity for advancement of our skills. As we parted company she urged us to be creative in our practice and to be mindful of the unique potential that exists in all of us.
